CIS 241 / 246 Final

By: Jeff Symons

Hello everybody,Jeff & Heather Symons, Killer, Xena, Trixie

My name is Jeff Symons, I have lived most of my life here in Washington State. I was born in Seattle, Washington at North West hospital on July 21, 1982. I lived in what is now shoreline till I was 5, when my family moved to the house my mom is still living in today, in Everett, Washington. I am married to Heather Symons, (seen right) we have 3 dogs; Killer a yellow lab, (seen right) Xena a minpin, (seen right) and Trixie a chihuahua. (seen right)

Jeff SymonsThe most exciting time of my life started one morning on september 11th when my alarm radio went off and it was not music. Still groggy, I went into the living room and turned on the TV in time to see the second place fly into the World Trade Center. Growing up I always said I would join the army if there was an attack on American soil, so when this happened I new what I was going to do. I met my wife a month later, who was fresh out of basic training and home on leave. She was going to be stationed in Germany. I thought this is going to be fun, so after obtaining a waver for childhood asthma and taking a mental placement test and a psychical, I Picked MP (Military Police) and guaranteed Germany in my contract. A few minutes after that I swore in as a United States Soldier. I was told I could go to basic training in two months, at this point it was already January and I wanted to see my girl friend. I asked if I could leave sooner, and was asked when I wanted to leave I replied “now or maybe tomorrow.” I was given two weeks to get my stuff inorder. I had basic training at ft. Leonardwood, Missouri and from there I was stationed in Kitzingen, Germany, deployed to Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo, then stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX before being separated for medical issues.

My wife is a disabled veteran as well as I, so a year ago when we were both between jobs we decided to go to school and take advantage of the benefits we had coming to us. Web design has been a hobby of mine since I was about 10 or 12 and I taught myself HTML by viewing web page sources and deleting lines to see what happened. I then started to understand links and images before long my knowledge spread to tables a several other tags. I am very excited to learn more in a education environment.

Enjoy!

    CIS 241 / 246 Web Development 1: Reflections

    By: Jeff Symons

Taking a Web Development class is something that I have always wanted to do and this class did not disapoint. As I mentioned on my home page, I have been working with HTML for a long time now and I have to say I had a lot of fun and this class has been my fovorite class that I have ever taken. My favorite part of this class has to be chapters 7 and 8. Learning forms and CSS has changed the way I look at web pages.

Did you have an "Ah Hah!" moment, if so what was it?

Yes, my “Ah Hah!” moment came in the form of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Now implemented through out this web site. I had seen and worked around them before, but I never knew how or what they were doing on a web page. I only knew that some codes did not work without them. Now having the understanding required to create and properly work with a syle.css document has changed everything for me. I love putting so many tags into the CSS file. This saves time, easly implements uniformity through out your web site, and allows easy changes to be made as well. For instance, this is prety much what my body tags looked like before this class:

    < Body Background="Images/BG-Bar3e.jpg" Text="#FFFFFF" Link="#6495ED" Alink="#DC143C" Vlink="#6495ED" Leftmargin="0" Topmargin="0">

    Now it is down to:

    < Body>

    or

    < Body class="Bar">

This class has been a lot of fun and I am anxious to take what I have learned and move onto CIS 242.

What did you like about the class?

I love web development which made this class a lot of fun. I liked making the case projects at the end of each chapter. It made me really want to work a head. Forms were another amazing part of this class. I have never made a E-Mail form before and learning about "Radio Buttons," "Checkboxes," and "Drop down menus" was a blast. I found forms alot easier than I had imagined It was going to be, I had them built up on a pedestal and there were was nothing to it. Like I previously stated Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) has changed everything for me. I could not believe how easy they are and the power behind using it. Being able to change the stlye of your whole web site in 2 clicks, it almost felt like cheating. I enjoyed this class being online because it made it easier to go fishing. However, I like the "in class" instruction better then "online" intruction, I will try to have "in class" courses in the future.
